Peter Maurin Center Mission Statement

The Peter Maurin Center was established in 1997 to, in the words of Peter Maurin, contribute to creating a "society where it is easier to be good." The Center contributes to this in three ways:

  • Evangelization in the Catholic Worker tradition. Primary project is the Catholic Worker Bookstore.

  • The Works of Mercy. Primary project is a furniture and household goods exchange, whereby people who have more than they need give it to the Center, and we distribute it to needy people.

  • Organizing for peace and justice. Primary projects involve solidarity with the people of Puerto Rico in their effort to de-colonize, and specifically to rid themselves of the Navy at Vieques; and work toward abolition of the death penalty, specifically focusing on the case of Mumia Abu-Jamal.
